How do guests see their lock code in the Airbnb app?

How Airbnb Seamless Entry automatically delivers smart lock codes to guests inside the Airbnb app, which locks are supported, and troubleshooting steps when the code doesn't appear.

Written by Tom Krones

Summary

When Host Tools programs a smart lock code for an Airbnb reservation, it automatically sends the door code and access window to Airbnb's Seamless Entry system. Your guest sees their entry code natively inside the Airbnb app, right alongside their reservation details — with no extra message required from you.

How it works

Seamless Entry runs automatically as part of the existing lock code flow. When Host Tools sets or updates a door code for an Airbnb reservation, it:

  1. Checks that the listing's lock configuration is registered with Airbnb (lock brand, model, and pin length). If it isn't, Host Tools registers it automatically.

  2. Sends the door code, check-in time, and check-out time to Airbnb so the code is active only during the guest's stay.

  3. When the reservation ends or the code is removed, Host Tools clears the entry from Airbnb so no stale codes remain.

There is no extra configuration in Host Tools — this happens for every eligible Airbnb reservation as long as your lock is connected and linked to the listing.

Supported locks

Airbnb Seamless Entry is supported for:

  • August locks — any August lock connected to Host Tools that uses a 4-digit pin

  • Seam-connected locks — Yale, Schlage, and August models connected via Seam that use a 4-digit pin

⚠️ Important: Seamless Entry requires the listing to be directly connected to an Airbnb account in Host Tools — it does not apply to co-host listings. Locks that use 6-digit (or other length) pins are not supported by Airbnb and are skipped automatically.

Why doesn't the code appear in the Airbnb app?

If your guest reports that no code appears in the Airbnb app, check the following:

  • Listing is connected as a co-host. Seamless Entry is not available for co-host listings. The guest will still receive the code via your automated Host Tools message rule.

  • Lock uses a pin length other than 4 digits. Airbnb only accepts 4-digit pins. Verify your lock's pin length in Settings > Smart Locks.

  • Lock brand is not in the supported list. Only August, Yale, Schlage, and August (via Seam) are currently supported. Other Seam- connected lock brands are skipped; a Sentry alert is logged for Host Tools to review.

  • Code has not been programmed yet. For Seam locks, codes are set up to 72 hours before check-in. The code will appear in the Airbnb app once it has been programmed.

💡 Pro tip: Even when Seamless Entry is active, we recommend keeping your message rule that includes {{Guest Lock Code}} — it serves as a backup in case the guest doesn't check the Airbnb app before arrival.
